LTO Revokes License Over Fatal NAIA Car Crash

Driver’s License Revoked After Deadly NAIA Crash

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has officially revoked the license of the driver involved in a fatal car crash at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) earlier this month. The exact 4-word keyphrase “fatal NAIA car crash” is central to this case.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the 47-year-old Batangas resident was found guilty of reckless driving. He was fined ₱2,000 and had his license suspended for four years for being deemed an “improper person to operate a motor vehicle.”

The LTO chief finalized these penalties in a five-page decision, emphasizing that the penalties represent the maximum allowed by law. The incident occurred on May 4 when a black Ford Everest SUV crashed into the departure area of NAIA Terminal 1.

Details of the Fatal NAIA Car Crash Incident

The crash tragically claimed the lives of a four-year-old child, the daughter of an overseas Filipino worker, and a 29-year-old man. Additionally, four other individuals sustained injuries. The SUV driver did not respond to a show cause order issued by the LTO, failing to defend himself against charges of reckless driving and being unfit to drive.

Under the Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01, reckless driving that endangers people or property carries a penalty of ₱2,000. The LTO confirmed that the driver’s behavior met this definition, given the severity of the collision and the resulting fatalities and injuries.

Legal Basis for License Revocation

The LTO explained that the driver’s negligence and lack of due diligence contributed to this tragic event. The resulting deaths, injuries, and property damage were deemed unacceptable and punishable under Republic Act 4136, also known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

The office reiterated that driving is a privilege, not a right, and licenses can be revoked when laws or road safety regulations are violated. Following the decision, the driver was released from detention after posting bail of ₱100,000 at the NAIA Police Station 1.

This case serves as a stern reminder of the importance of responsible driving, especially in high-traffic areas like airport terminals. Authorities continue to monitor and enforce regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
