Driver Faces 90-Day Suspension for Child Driving Incident
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed a 90-day preventive suspension on a driver caught allowing a child to steer the vehicle while sitting on his lap. This alarming behavior, captured in a viral video, has drawn significant attention from authorities and the public alike.
The viral clip, widely shared on social media, shows the driver teaching the child how to control the steering wheel inside a mall parking lot in Parañaque City. The video’s original caption humorously called the child the “Baby Driver,” but officials are treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
Strict Regulations on Child Drivers Emphasized
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon reminded the public that it is strictly prohibited for children to operate vehicles without a valid student permit. “You cannot let your young child drive without a student permit, especially if they are still very, very young,” he emphasized in Filipino.
He further warned, “The President’s reminder is to simply follow the law, because you might not just face a license suspension — you could also end up in jail.” Authorities are clear that child safety and strict compliance with traffic laws are non-negotiable.
Driver Summoned for Official Hearing
According to a show-cause order issued by the LTO, the driver was summoned to appear before the Intelligence and Investigation Division in Quezon City on August 20. He was required to submit a written explanation addressing allegations of reckless driving and violation of child passenger safety laws.
The specific charges include Reckless Driving under Section 48 of R.A. 4136 and Children in Rear Seats under Section 5 of R.A. 11229. Additionally, the driver must clarify why his license should not be revoked or suspended for being deemed an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle under Section 27 (a) of R.A. 4136.
On the day of the hearing, the driver is instructed to surrender his license as part of the administrative process. Community members noted that beyond the license suspension, the vehicle involved has been placed under alarm as a precaution.
Implications for Road Safety and Law Enforcement
Officials reported that this case serves as a stern reminder to all motorists about the dangers and legal consequences of allowing unqualified individuals, especially children, to operate motor vehicles. The LTO continues to enforce traffic rules strictly to ensure public safety on the roads.
Local leaders emphasized that parents and guardians must exercise responsibility and set proper examples to protect their children and other road users.
