LTO Suspends Jeepney Driver’s License After Viral Carriedo Accident

LTO Suspends Jeepney Driver’s License Over Viral Carriedo Accident

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the license of the jeepney driver involved in a viral Carriedo accident for 90 days. Authorities took this action after a video circulated online showing a man holding a person who appeared to have been struck by the jeepney during heavy rain in Manila.

In addition to the license suspension, the passenger jeepney has been placed under alarm status. This status prevents any transactions involving the vehicle while the investigation is ongoing, officials reported.

Investigation and Due Process Underway

Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, head of the LTO, emphasized that the investigation by the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division will clarify the incident. “The investigation that will be conducted by the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division will shed light on that incident and will give the driver the opportunity to explain what happened in the spirit of due process,” Mendoza said.

Community members described the viral video, first uploaded by Facebook user Ligaya del Rosario on August 22. It shows a man cradling an individual who appeared unconscious after being hit by the jeepney along a rain-soaked street in Carriedo, Manila.

Witnesses saw the man carefully carry the injured person into the passenger jeepney as bystanders urgently called for assistance.

Show Cause Orders Issued to Driver and Owner

The LTO has also issued show cause orders to both the jeepney’s registered owner and the driver. The owner must explain why they should not be held administratively liable for employing a reckless driver. Meanwhile, the driver must justify why he should not be charged with reckless driving.

Officials further revealed that the driver will be investigated for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle. This could lead to the revocation of his license if proven true, sources said.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

The show cause order clearly states, “Failure to appear and submit the verified or sworn comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this Office as a waiver of your rights to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand.”

Authorities remain committed to ensuring accountability while respecting due process in handling the viral Carriedo accident. Community members continue to watch developments closely as investigations proceed.
