LTO Suspends SUV Driver License After Crash

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed a 90-day suspension on the license of an SUV driver linked to a multi-vehicle crash in Manila that injured five people. Authorities said the incident has triggered swift administrative action to uphold road safety.

Officials reported that the LTO issued a show cause order last Friday, which was later shared by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on social media. The driver must submit a sworn statement explaining why he should not be held accountable for violating traffic laws.

Details of the Multi-Vehicle Manila Crash

The multi-vehicle Manila crash happened last Wednesday at the intersection of Blumentritt Road and Rizal Avenue, sources said. The SUV was traveling southbound when it first hit the center island near Cavite Street, then collided with a wagon moving in the same direction.

Local leaders noted that the vehicle then struck a motorcycle ahead, a pedestrian preparing to board a jeepney, and a taxi at the corner of Blumentritt Street. The impact caused the jeepney to crash into a pedicab, which subsequently hit a van.

Community members confirmed that five individuals were injured and immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities also indicated the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol during the crash.

Legal Grounds for Suspension

The LTO cited violations under Republic Act 4136, known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code. These include reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, and being an unfit person to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver is required to surrender his license upon appearing for a hearing scheduled on September 1. Meanwhile, the SUV involved has been placed under alarm status, preventing any transactions involving the vehicle with the agency.

Ensuring Accountability and Road Safety

Officials stressed that these measures aim to reinforce accountability and deter reckless behavior on the roads. The LTO’s decisive action sends a clear message about the consequences of violating traffic laws, especially when public safety is at risk.

Community members urged motorists to exercise caution and responsibility behind the wheel, emphasizing that road safety is a shared duty.
