Magat Dam to Open Spillway Gate for Safety
RAMON, Isabela — The National Irrigation Administration–Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MARIIS) is set to open a one-meter spillway gate at Magat Dam on Thursday, July 23, 2025. This move comes as a precautionary measure ahead of anticipated heavy rains from Tropical Depression “Emong” and Tropical Storm “Dante.” The planned release aims to manage water levels and secure the dam’s structure amid the incoming weather threats.
Engineer Carlo Ablan, dam division manager of NIA-MARIIS, explained that the water release also considers the influence of the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” which may bring additional rainfall to the dam’s watershed. “These minimal, preemptive releases are necessary to maintain a safe water level and ensure the structural integrity of the dam,” Ablan said.
Early Warning Systems Activated Downstream
To keep communities downstream informed, 24 early warning stations from Ramon town to Gamu town have been activated. The stations will monitor water levels and alert residents of any significant changes. Local authorities will also disseminate alerts through government channels and media outlets to ensure timely warnings reach those at risk.
This proactive approach is designed to reduce potential flood risks and allow residents to prepare ahead of time. Local leaders noted the importance of coordinated efforts between agencies and communities to safeguard lives and property during the upcoming weather conditions.
