Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Shakes San Luis, Batangas
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck San Luis town in Batangas province on Tuesday morning, local sources said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tremor occurred at 11:39 a.m., with its epicenter located 11 kilometers southwest of San Luis.
The earthquake had a shallow depth of five kilometers, making the shaking noticeable in nearby areas. This tectonic earthquake was caused by sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries, which is common in the region.
Intensity and Areas Affected
Residents in Lemery and Mabini towns in Batangas felt the quake at Intensity III, the same level reported in Tagaytay City, Cavite. Meanwhile, Lipa City and Calatagan town experienced Intensity II shaking, while Bauan town recorded Intensity I.
Instrumental readings confirmed these observations, showing Intensity III in Lemery, Sta. Teresita, and Tagaytay City; Intensity II in Lipa City, Calaca, and Calatagan; and Intensity I in Bauan and Batangas City.
Intensity levels reflect how strongly the earthquake affects people and damages property, while instrumental intensities are measured using specialized scales.
No Damage or Aftershocks Expected
Phivolcs reassured the public that no damage or aftershocks are expected from this tremor. The region remains under constant monitoring due to its seismic activity.
Seismic Activity in Batangas and the Philippines
Batangas lies along the Lubang Fault, situated between Mindoro Island and Batangas, which is one of the country’s most active seismic zones. This fault contributes to frequent earthquakes in the area.
The Philippines is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where several tectonic plates meet. This geological setting results in frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity across the archipelago.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared as local authorities continue to monitor seismic events closely.
