Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Rocks Masbate Province
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake jolted Masbate province on Monday afternoon, sources said. This notable seismic event struck at 2:35 p.m., with its epicenter located about 12 kilometers northwest of San Fernando, Masbate.
The earthquake, of tectonic origin, occurred at a shallow depth of 11 kilometers. Local authorities and monitoring agencies confirmed the tremor was felt across several provinces in the region.
Reported Intensities Across Affected Areas
Residents experienced varying levels of shaking. Intensity V was felt in San Fernando, Masbate, marking the strongest impact zone. Meanwhile, Intensity IV was reported in the City of Masbate and Uson in Masbate province, as well as Bulan in nearby Sorsogon.
Other towns in Masbate such as Aroroy, Baleno, Cataingan, Cawayan, Mandaon, Monreal, Pio V. Corpus, Palanas, and San Jacinto experienced Intensity III shaking. Lower intensities of II and I were felt in surrounding areas including Balud in Masbate, and Casiguran, Irosin, Juban, Pilar, Bulusan, and Magallanes in Sorsogon.
Instrumental Readings Confirm Wide Reach
Instrumental data recorded Intensity IV in the City of Masbate, while Intensity III was observed in Batuan, Cataingan, and Milagros, all in Masbate. Intensity II readings were noted in Bulusan, Sorsogon; Kawayan, Biliran; and Rosario, Northern Samar.
Lower instrumental intensities of I were documented in cities and towns including Cebu City, Bogo City in Cebu, Sorsogon City, Castilla in Sorsogon, Legazpi City in Albay, Culaba in Biliran, Leyte in Leyte, Gandara in Samar, and Talibon in Bohol.
No Damage or Aftershocks Expected
Despite the relatively strong quake, sources affirmed that no damage is expected. Authorities also indicated that aftershocks are unlikely to occur following this seismic event.
Residents are advised to remain alert but calm as monitoring continues.
