Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Strikes Waters Off Surigao del Norte
Authorities reported that a magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the waters off Surigao del Norte early Thursday morning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed the seismic event and warned that aftershocks are likely to follow.
The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred at 6:45 a.m. Its epicenter was located approximately 55 kilometers southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, at a depth of 17 kilometers, officials reported.
Instrumental Intensities Recorded in Nearby Areas
Phivolcs recorded varying intensities across several nearby locations. The City of Surigao in Surigao del Norte and the City of Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte experienced Intensity II tremors. Meanwhile, Hinunangan in Southern Leyte felt Intensity I shaking.
Local leaders noted that the tremors were felt but did not cause any damage to properties or infrastructure. Community members expressed relief as no injuries or disruptions were reported.

Experts reminded residents in the affected regions to remain alert for possible aftershocks following the magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck waters off Surigao del Norte. They advised the public to follow safety protocols and stay informed through official channels.
