Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Strikes Davao Oriental Waters
Officials reported that a magnitude 5.0 earthquake rattled the waters off Davao Oriental on Friday afternoon. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that aftershocks are likely to follow this seismic event.
The earthquake, tectonic in origin, occurred precisely at 3:08 p.m. Its epicenter was pinpointed eight kilometers southeast of Caraga, Davao Oriental, at a depth of 147 kilometers beneath the surface, sources said.
Intensity Levels Recorded Across Neighboring Areas
Phivolcs detailed the instrumental intensities recorded in nearby locations. Intensity II shaking was observed in the City of Digos, Davao del Sur; Nabunturan in Davao de Oro; and Malungon, Sarangani.
Meanwhile, Intensity I tremors were felt in Matanao, Davao del Sur; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Sarangani; the City of General Santos and Tupi in South Cotabato; and the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur, community members noted.
No Damage Expected, But Vigilance Advised
Despite the strength of the quake, officials reported no expected damage to properties or infrastructure. Nevertheless, residents are advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks and to follow safety protocols recommended by authorities.
Local leaders stressed the importance of preparedness and urged communities in affected areas to stay informed through official channels.
