Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Batangas Early Wednesday
Residents in Batangas experienced a magnitude 5.1 earthquake past midnight on Wednesday, local authorities reported. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that the quake’s epicenter was located just 2 kilometers northeast of Calaca, Batangas.
The earthquake, which had a tectonic origin, struck precisely at 12:43 a.m. and reached a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. This shallow focus contributed to the noticeable shaking felt in nearby areas.
Intensity Levels Recorded Across Several Locations
Phivolcs detailed the intensity of the earthquake’s impact in various parts of the country. Quezon City reported an intensity level of III, while the City of Makati experienced a milder intensity II.
Instrumental readings showed stronger effects in some areas. Intensity IV shaking was recorded in Sta. Teresita, Lemery, and Cuenca in Batangas, as well as Carmona in Cavite, Muntinlupa City, and Guinayangan in Quezon. Meanwhile, intensity III was felt in Bauan, Batangas City, and Nasugbu, all in Batangas province.
Other locations such as Abucay in Bataan, Mataas Na Kahoy in Batangas, and several cities in Cavite and Laguna experienced intensity II levels. These include Trece Martires, Naic, Ternate, Bacoor City, and San Pedro City.
Damage Expected, But No Aftershocks or Tsunami Warnings
Due to the quake’s strength, officials anticipate some damage in affected areas. However, community leaders noted that no aftershocks are expected following this event. Moreover, authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings in connection with this earthquake.
