Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Hits Northern Samar Waters
A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the waters off Northern Samar at midday on Wednesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the seismic event occurred at exactly 12:41 p.m.
The quake’s epicenter was located at 12.83°N latitude and 126.02°E longitude, approximately 91 kilometers north and 65 degrees east of the municipality of Mapanas. It originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, indicating tectonic activity beneath the earth’s surface.
Impact and Aftershocks Expected in Northern Samar Waters
Residents in nearby Palapag experienced a mild shaking, which PHIVOLCS classified as Intensity II on the seismic scale. Fortunately, no damage has been reported so far, but authorities have advised that aftershocks may follow in the coming hours or days.
