A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the shore of Calayan town in Cagayan on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. Residents and authorities are now on alert as aftershocks are expected following this seismic event.
The earthquake occurred at 1:45 p.m. west of Calayan. Phivolcs confirmed that the quake was tectonic in origin, caused by movements within the Earth’s crust, and it struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.
