Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Off Davao Occidental Coast
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the waters off Davao Occidental early Saturday morning, shaking communities in the region but causing no tsunami threat to the country, authorities confirmed.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the tremor occurred at 7:07 a.m., approximately 85 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town. Despite the strong quake, Phivolcs reassured the public that there is no tsunami risk following this event.
No Tsunami Threat, But Sea Level Disturbances Possible
Phivolcs emphasized, “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.” However, the agency added that the size of the earthquake might cause unusual sea level changes along the nearby coasts.
Residents near Davao Occidental and surrounding provinces may observe some irregular sea level disturbances, but these are not expected to pose any danger.
Aftershocks Expected, No Damage Foreseen
Local authorities and seismologists anticipate aftershocks following the magnitude 6.1 earthquake. Nonetheless, initial assessments indicate that no significant damage is expected from these tremors. Communities in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant but calm.
Local leaders noted the importance of preparedness and urged residents to stay informed through official channels.
