Ambush in Maguindanao del Sur Claims Life
Authorities in Maguindanao del Sur have identified persons of interest in the ambush of a passenger van that resulted in the death of an Islamic preacher and injuries to seven others. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, August 25, 2025, marking a tragic event in the area.

The victims were traveling from Cotabato City to Sultan sa Barongis aboard a Toyota HiAce van when the ambush occurred. Officials noted that the attack took place during the election gun ban period in Maguindanao del Sur ahead of the October parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Clan Conflict Remains a Strong Lead
According to local leaders, the “rido” or clan war remains a primary angle in the ongoing investigation. “We are looking at ‘rido’ (clan war) among the possible motives,” Capt. Tamayo said, while also confirming that other possibilities are being explored.

Van Driver’s Quick Action Saves Lives
Community members praised the quick thinking of the van driver, Sanya Dalgan Untong, who managed to drive the wounded to Barangay Crossing Salbu. There, he sought help from the nearest police detachment. Remarkably, the driver was unharmed during the attack.
Officials reported that the driver’s prompt response was crucial in ensuring that the injured received timely medical attention, potentially saving several lives.
