Widespread Support for PH Rejoining ICC Emerges
MANILA, Philippines — A recent survey reveals that the majority of Filipinos support the Philippines rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC). The keyphrase “PH rejoining ICC” reflects the growing public sentiment favoring the country’s renewed engagement with this global tribunal.
Between April 20 and 24, a nationwide survey showed that 57 percent of Filipinos back PH rejoining ICC, while 37 percent oppose it, and 6 percent remain undecided. These findings signal a clear, though not unanimous, public inclination towards reengagement.
Strong Awareness and Regional Differences in Support
The survey also measured public awareness about the ICC. An overwhelming 85 percent of respondents had heard or read about the ICC, while only 13 percent were unaware and 1 percent undecided. This high level of awareness likely contributes to the overall favorable view of PH rejoining ICC.
However, support varies significantly across regions and demographics. Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, and the Visayas registered over 60 percent approval, contrasting sharply with Mindanao, where only 30 percent favored rejoining and 66 percent opposed it. This makes Mindanao the region with the highest opposition.
Age and Regional Variations in Opinion
Age groups also differ in their support. The 25 to 34 age bracket showed the strongest backing at 62 percent, while the 45 to 54 age group had the least support at 50 percent. Regionally, most areas favored rejoining except for parts of Mindanao and Central Visayas, where support fell below 45 percent.
Specifically, regions such as Central Visayas (44%), Northern Mindanao (36%), Zamboanga Peninsula (34%), Davao Region (16%), Soccsksargen (34%), Caraga (30%), and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (31%) showed lower support levels.
Survey Methodology and Confidence
The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,200 Filipinos aged 18 and older. It carries a margin of error of ±3 percent at a 95 percent confidence level, lending credibility to the results.
Local leaders and experts note that these findings reflect a generally positive national outlook on PH rejoining ICC, despite regional and demographic differences. This public sentiment could influence future government decisions on international justice participation.
