Makabayan Lawmakers Urge Senate to Proceed with Vice President Impeachment
Makabayan lawmakers on Wednesday, June 4, firmly reminded senators of their duty to proceed with Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial amid rumors that some senators might push for its de facto dismissal. The call to act swiftly on the impeachment case stresses the need for transparency and accountability in government.
Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas strongly condemned the alleged plan by certain senators to file a resolution that could dismiss the Vice President’s impeachment complaints prematurely. “Napakagarapal naman na gawin yan ng Senado sa ngayon, dahil alam naman natin na ang panawagan… put the Vice President on trial,” Brosas said during an interview with local reporters.
She emphasized that the Senate should not delay the impeachment process. A proper trial would allow the public to uncover the truth behind the accusations. Brosas noted that the Senate seems to be hesitating, perhaps due to internal leadership issues. “‘Yung senado mukhang marami syang tinitimbang. Even ang leadership siguro ng Senate is in question kaya siguro nagkakaganyan, pero we go beyond that sa usapin ng public accountability,” she added.
Senators Reminded of Their Responsibilities
Kabataan Party-list Representative Raoul Manuel also reminded the senators that accepting their positions means they must address any impeachment complaints that come their way. He questioned the sincerity of senators who might refuse to carry out this duty. “In the first place, kung di pala sila hanada… ba’t nila kinuha yung position, bakit sila tumakbo, bakit sila umupo?” Manuel asked.
He further stressed that senators cannot selectively perform their roles based on convenience. “They have to review their functions and their mandate, kasi di pwedeng mamimili sila aling functions lang ang kanilang gagampanan, based lang kung ano yung convenient sa kanila,” Manuel added.
The statements from these lawmakers underscore the urgent need for the Senate to uphold its constitutional role and proceed with the impeachment trial without delay. Public accountability must take precedence over political considerations.
