Makati City Mayor-Elect Prepares to Resolve Local Government Assets

Senator Nancy Binay Ready to Address Makati-Taguig Issues

Makati City mayor-elect and outgoing Senator Nancy Binay has expressed her readiness to engage with her sister, former Makati mayor Abby Binay, and reelected Taguig City mayor Lani Cayetano. This move comes as she prepares to assume her new role as the city’s mayor.

Binay, who will conclude her second six-year term as senator on June 30, plans to initiate discussions once she officially takes office. She won the mayoral race against her brother-in-law, Representative Luis Campos, the husband of her sister, in the May 2025 elections. Meanwhile, Abby Binay ran for senator but did not secure a seat.

Plans to Resolve Control Over Local Government Assets

One of the critical matters Senator Binay aims to address involves the assets of the Makati local government, which are currently under Taguig City’s control following a Supreme Court ruling. This includes several key public facilities such as schools, health centers, a hospital, and a park spread across 10 barangays.

She emphasized the importance of forming transition teams to manage these issues, especially concerning the legal status of the so-called “Embo” barangays. “I’m not familiar with the legal situation of the Embo barangays,” she admitted during a recent forum.

Studying the Future of the Makati City Subway Project

Another pressing concern is the Makati City subway project, which is presently embroiled in an arbitration case. Binay stated that she will thoroughly review the project because it could represent a significant expense for the city.

“We need to study it because that’s going to be additional expense for the city. We need to hire our own lawyers,” she explained. Despite the challenges, she expressed openness to the idea of mass transportation, recognizing its potential benefits for the city’s residents.

Open to Dialogue for Smooth Transition

Regarding her willingness to initiate talks with her sister and Mayor Cayetano, Binay said, “Okay lang sa aking mag-initiate (It’s okay for me to initiate a dialogue).” This statement highlights her commitment to fostering cooperation for the benefit of Makati and its neighboring areas.

As she prepares to take on the mayoral seat, Binay’s proactive stance aims to resolve longstanding disputes and ensure a smooth transition of power. Community leaders and local experts recognize this approach as a positive step toward addressing complex intercity challenges.
