Malabon City Government Provides Aid to Fire and Flood Victims
The Malabon City government stepped in promptly to assist families affected by recent emergencies, providing relief to 11 families displaced by fire and over 500 families impacted by flooding. This swift response highlights the city’s commitment to support residents during difficult times.
The fire-affected families are currently staying at the Muzon Elementary School Multipurpose Hall, where each household received essential food packs. These included noodles, canned goods, rice, coffee, and bottled water. In addition, hygiene kits and sleeping kits were distributed to help meet their immediate needs. To improve their temporary living conditions, modular tents and portable toilets were also set up.
Details of the Fire Incident
Reports indicate that the fire started at 12:55 p.m. and was contained by 1:22 p.m. Seven houses were destroyed, resulting in one casualty and two injured individuals. Community leaders expressed their deepest sympathies and assured residents of ongoing support.
“Ramdam po namin ang lungkot na nararanasan ninyo lalo na’t mahirap ang mawalan ng tahanan. Kaya naman po, kasama ang City Social Welfare and Development Department o CSWDD, kami sa pamahalaang lungsod ay agad na naghatid ang mga tulong na ito upang makaawas sa inyong mga alalahanin. Sa inyo pong muling pagbangon at pag-ahon, naririto po kami na inyong kaagapay, suporta, at sandigan,” shared a local official.
Flood Relief Efforts and Causes
Meanwhile, the city also extended assistance to more than 500 families affected by flooding in Barangay Hulong Duhat. The flooding was traced back to a malfunction in the Malabon-Navotas River Navigational Gate, which is currently undergoing repairs by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
The mayor visited the flood-affected area to distribute aid and reaffirmed the city’s readiness to address flood risks, especially during the rainy season and high tides. She emphasized that the government is actively monitoring 48 pumping stations and 120 floodgates across Malabon to mitigate flooding.
Ongoing Preparedness and Safety Measures
In addition to relief distribution, local authorities have been conducting cleanup drives and clearing blocked waterways to prevent further flooding. Residents are urged to coordinate immediately with the city, especially vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, to ensure safety during emergencies.
“Gayundin po ay laging isaalang-alang ang mga dapat tandaan gaya ng pagsiguro na walang naiwan kandilang nakasindi kapag aalis ng bahay, upang hindi magkaroon ng pagmumulan ng ano mang insidente,” the mayor advised, highlighting the importance of fire safety.
The city government also reminded the public to follow fire prevention tips, including not leaving lit candles unattended, avoiding overloaded electrical outlets, keeping flammable materials away from children, and preparing emergency escape plans.
