Malabon City Launches Cleanup and Declogging Drive Ahead of Rainy Season
The Malabon City government initiated a major cleanup and declogging drive in Barangay Hulong Duhat on Wednesday, May 21, to reduce flooding risks as the rainy season approaches. This cleanup and declogging drive aims to clear drainage systems and other waterways to prevent water buildup during heavy rains.
Concerns have grown after reports indicated mechanical problems with the Malabon-Navotas River navigational gate managed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Community leaders warned that these issues might increase flooding risks for nearby neighborhoods.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval emphasized the city’s proactive stance, saying, “As we expect rainy weather in the coming month, the city government is taking early steps to protect every family in every barangay.”
Coordinated Efforts to Prevent Flooding
Personnel from various city departments, including the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), City Engineering Department (CED), and MMDA, joined forces in the cleanup operation. The work covered the stretch from the Women’s Club area to Don Basilio Street, focusing on removing trash and debris that could block drainage during storms.
Mayor Sandoval also inspected the Bonifacio Pumping Station in Barangay Flores, which supports multiple communities, including Barangay Hulong Duhat. She assured residents that the city prioritizes maintaining order, cleanliness, and safety.
“Malabueños! In conducting operations like this, our priority is order, cleanliness, and most importantly, everyone’s safety. That’s why we are calling on you to join the continued cleanup efforts in every part of the city. This is our shared responsibility as members of the community. We must do this to prevent any issues while the navigational gate is being repaired,” the mayor urged.
Support for Families and Ongoing Maintenance
In addition to the cleanup, the city government distributed food packs to 591 families in Barangay Hulong Duhat. Each package contained rice, canned goods, noodles, and coffee to help families prepare for possible flooding.
Local sources confirmed that Malabon operates 44 pumping stations managed by the city government, MMDA, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). All stations remain functional and are regularly maintained.
Officials from CENRO and CED continue to carry out routine cleanup and declogging activities as part of the city’s long-term flood control program.
Through these combined efforts, Malabon City aims to minimize flooding impacts and safeguard its residents during the rainy season.
