Malabon City Strengthens Flood Preparedness Ahead Rainy Season

Malabon City Boosts Flood Preparedness as Rainy Season Approaches

The local government of Malabon City has taken significant steps to ensure the safety and welfare of its residents with the rainy season drawing near. Officials have emphasized their commitment to proactive flood preparedness, aiming to protect communities from the impacts of heavy rainfall.

During a recent meeting of the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDDRMC), city leaders, including emergency response teams and various agencies, convened to discuss strategies for managing potential flooding in vulnerable barangays. According to local experts overseeing the efforts, the city prioritizes early action to minimize risks and safeguard families.

“Kaya naman kahit hindi pa dumadating kalamidad, ay nakahanda na po tayo para sa mga operasyon at nagsasagawa ng mga pre-emptive at preventive efforts natin,” a community leader said. “Makakasiguro po ang mga residente ng lungsod na una ang kaligtasan ng bawat isa ano man ang panahon.”

Comprehensive Preparations for Flood Response

The city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has instructed all response teams to verify their resources and personnel readiness. This includes inspecting facilities, replenishing food and supply stocks, and ensuring emergency equipment is in place for rapid deployment.

Teams are scheduled to conduct pre-disaster risk assessments and develop clear plans for evacuation and emergency response. Communication channels will be strengthened to provide timely information and instructions to residents, helping them understand what actions to take before, during, and after flooding events.

The city’s Command and Communication Center will operate around the clock to monitor weather conditions, waterways, and infrastructure. They will utilize roadside cameras and an early warning system, alongside regular checks of boats and emergency vehicles, to maintain preparedness.

Health and Safety Measures at Evacuation Centers

Health officers from the City Health Department, City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWDD), and barangay officials will be stationed at evacuation centers. Their role includes enforcing health protocols such as social distancing, sanitation practices, and waste management to ensure safe and orderly shelters.

Approximately 4,500 food packs and essential non-food items are ready for distribution to families displaced by floods or affected by relief operations. Additionally, evacuees will have access to mobile health services, including clinics on wheels, laundry, showers, restrooms, water stations, and charging facilities.

Infrastructure and Environmental Efforts to Prevent Flooding

The City Engineering Department continuously monitors 48 pumping stations and 120 floodgates to manage water levels effectively and reduce flood risks. Regular clearing of rivers, canals, and drainage systems is ongoing to prevent blockages.

Environmental teams and Estero Rangers are actively involved in trimming trees and clearing debris along waterways and streets. These efforts aim to maintain unobstructed water flow and lessen the chance of flooding during heavy rains.

Emergency Personnel and Equipment on Standby

About 20 personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection in Malabon remain on standby for rescue missions. Emergency vehicles, including boats, ambulances, and fire trucks, have been strategically positioned for immediate response when needed.

City officials affirm that all departments are prepared to face the challenges of the rainy season. “Lahat po ng departamento ng pamahalaang lungsod ay nakahanda na para sa pagpasok ng tag-ulan. Noong nakaraang taon ay napaghandaan natin ang mga ito at nakapagsagawa ng mga operasyon na kinakailangan,” said a city administrator. “Ngayon po, patuloy [ang] paghikayat natin sa mga pamilya na makipagtulungan sa atin para sa kaligtasan, kaayusan, at kapakanan bago pa man dumating ang bagyo o iba pang kalamidad.”

Residents can report emergencies by calling the city’s hotlines or using the Malabon AHON 24/7 Alert App to reach local authorities quickly.
