New Solicitor General Takes Office
Malacañang has officially appointed University of the Philippines Law Dean Darlene Marie Berberabe as the country’s new Solicitor General. This key government position comes at a time when the administration faces complex constitutional issues and critical legal battles. Sources familiar with the matter describe Berberabe as highly qualified to lead the government’s legal team through these challenges.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez expressed strong support for the new Solicitor General, emphasizing her capability to represent the Republic effectively. “Newly appointed Solicitor General Berberabe is stepping in at a critical moment, and I have no doubt she is ready. Her legal expertise, leadership, and integrity make her the right choice to serve as the Republic’s chief legal defender,” Romualdez said.
Qualifications and Leadership of the New Solicitor General
Dean Berberabe boasts an impressive background, having graduated with top honors in both philosophy and law from the University of the Philippines. She has also served as the dean of the UP College of Law, where she promoted access to legal education and championed ethical legal practices.
Romualdez noted that the position demands more than just formality. “This is not a ceremonial post. We need a Solicitor General who can stand firm before the Supreme Court, argue persuasively, and safeguard the legal interests of the State,” he explained. With several cases still pending before the Supreme Court, the role requires sharp, independent counsel.
Expectations and Support from the House
The House of Representatives stands firmly behind Berberabe as she assumes her mandate to defend the Constitution and represent the Republic in court. Romualdez, a lawyer and president of the Philippine Constitution Association, praised her professional record as marked by discipline, fairness, and vision.
“Dean Berberabe has the intellect, experience, and independence to do just that,” Romualdez added. Her appointment is part of the ongoing executive branch-wide restructuring initiated by the current administration. She succeeds Menardo Guevarra in this vital role.
Romualdez concluded by expressing confidence in Berberabe’s leadership, saying she will guide the Office of the Solicitor General with patriotism and rigor, qualities that have defined her career.
