Man Arrested for Impersonating NBI Agent
A man who pretended to be an agent of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and collected thousands of pesos from people aspiring to become NBI agents, police officers, or pass the Civil Service Commission exam was arrested recently. The suspect targeted individuals by promising them guaranteed jobs and exam success in exchange for money.
Authorities from the NBI’s Technical Investigation Division quickly apprehended the suspect at a shopping mall in Manila. During the arrest, NBI Director confronted him for using the director’s signature on a forged ID card.
Fake Credentials and False Promises
The suspect introduced himself as an NBI agent and assured his victims of employment opportunities at both the NBI and the Civil Service Commission. According to NBI Intelligence officials, he also handed out counterfeit documents, including fake scholarship grants for those aiming to become flight attendants.
Upon arrest, authorities recovered a fake NBI badge, ID, and other fraudulent papers. It was uncovered that the suspect had collected around ₱200,000 from a couple who believed they would pass the Civil Service exam and receive a P35,000 monthly salary at the NBI.
Links to Illegal Activities and Victim Appeals
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had connections to an orphanage raided in Bulacan for allegedly facilitating illegal adoptions of children by foreigners. One of the complainants, identified only as “Mac,” expressed concern over his family’s future after discovering the documents processed by the suspect were forged.
“Mac” pleaded for the return of his savings, which he had entrusted to the suspect. Meanwhile, the suspect denied all allegations, stating, “Wala po akong ginagawang mali sir. Kumbaga sa ano, tiwala lang po.”
Legal Charges and Victim Support
The NBI confirmed that the suspect will face estafa charges since the offense was consummated by the receipt of money. Officials encourage anyone who may have been defrauded in the past to visit the NBI office so their cases can be included in the investigation.
This case highlights the risks of fraudulent schemes exploiting job seekers and exam applicants. Authorities urge the public to verify credentials and report suspicious activities immediately.
