Arrest Made in Rentangay Vehicle Theft Case
Authorities recently apprehended a man involved in stealing vehicles through the “rentangay” modus operandi in Las Piñas City. The arrest came after the suspect’s girlfriend reported him to the police.
The suspect, known by the alias “Lawrence,” was taken into custody when police intercepted him during a scheduled meeting with his girlfriend. Despite his attempts to resist arrest, officers from the Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) successfully brought him to Camp Crame.
Charges and Details of the Rentangay Modus
Lawrence faces multiple charges, including carnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and violations of the Anti-Fencing Law. Police sources explain that the “rentangay” modus involves renting a vehicle with no intention of returning it, a scheme that has victimized several car owners.
PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Lieutenant Nadame Malang urged victims to come forward: “We are appealing kung kayo’y naging biktima ng taong nito, narito ang HPG para mag assist at para matulungan ang ating mga kababayan na madagdagan pa ng kaso para sa taong nito.” (We are appealing to the victims of this person. PNP-HPG is here to assist you in filing charges against him.)
Suspect’s Response and Appeal
Meanwhile, Lawrence expressed disbelief that his girlfriend reported him. He said, “Natakot siya na madamay” (She was afraid of getting involved). He also admitted to using illegal drugs and appealed to the victims to withdraw the complaints against him.
“Pa rehab na rin ako. Nagulat ako. Kung papayag siya na aregulahin, mabalik yung motor, aregluhin po namin,” he added. (I’m willing to undergo rehabilitation. I was caught off guard. If the victim agrees to settle and get the motorcycle back, we will return and fix it.)
Authorities continue to encourage anyone affected by this rentangay vehicle theft scheme to report and cooperate to help bring more suspects to justice.
