Tragic Shooting in Pasig City
A 31-year-old man was fatally shot by his neighbor in Pasig City after being mistaken for an akyat bahay, or burglar. The heartbreaking incident unfolded in Barangay Maybunga, where local authorities later confirmed the victim’s death.
Events Leading to the Shooting
Before the shooting, barangay footage showed the victim, known as Nano, walking to the suspect’s home on a Tuesday in May. According to reports from community leaders, Nano intended to speak with the neighbor but was tragically misidentified as a thief.
In an interview with the victim’s live-in partner, she recounted that the suspect claimed Nano was spotted on their roof holding a hammer. However, eyewitnesses and CCTV recordings contradicted this, showing the victim outside the house without any tools. Witnesses also said Nano introduced himself and explained he was not there to commit a crime but was simply searching for something.
Witness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath
Witnesses described how Nano pleaded for his life, reminding the neighbor that he has a two-year-old child. Unfortunately, the suspect ignored these pleas. Barangay Maybunga officials responded swiftly, arriving at the scene to find the victim lying face down with no signs of life. Reports indicate he was shot in the chest, with the bullet likely exiting through his side.
Suspect’s Surrender and Legal Charges
The suspect fled immediately after the shooting but later surrendered to authorities. He now faces several charges, including homicide, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and violation of the election gun ban under the Omnibus Election Code. Currently, he is detained at the Pasig City Custodial Facility and has yet to make a public statement.
This tragic case highlights the dangers of mistaken identity and the urgent need for community awareness and proper law enforcement.
