Mandatory Face Mask Policy in Cotabato Health Facilities

Mandatory Face Mask Policy in Cotabato Health Facilities

The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) in Cotabato has implemented a new rule requiring the mandatory wearing of face masks inside all health facilities in the province. This policy aims to curb the transmission of contagious diseases, including monkeypox, amid rising concerns in the region.

According to sources familiar with the matter, IPHO issued a detailed health advisory on May 29 urging all patients and visitors to comply with the face mask mandate when inside hospitals, clinics, barangay health stations, rural and city health units, lying-ins, and other standalone medical centers.

Protecting Vulnerable Populations and Health Workers

The mandatory face mask policy covers every health facility in Cotabato. The health office emphasized that this measure seeks to minimize the spread of respiratory and close-contact infections. Additionally, it aims to safeguard vulnerable groups such as healthcare workers, immunocompromised individuals, and patients receiving clinical care.

Health officials explained that wearing face masks significantly lowers the risk of airborne transmission. It also helps maintain safe and accessible public health services during this period of heightened disease threat.

Regional Context: Monkeypox Cases and Clarifications

Reports indicate that the Soccsksargen region, also known as Region 12, faces a growing number of monkeypox cases, totaling 14. This region includes Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City. Of the cases, ten are from South Cotabato, three from Sultan Kudarat, and one from Cotabato province.

Despite these cases, local health authorities have firmly denied rumors of a lockdown being imposed in any of the regional provinces, cities, or municipalities. They warned the public against spreading false information that could result in criminal charges.

Health Facility Preparedness and Response

Community leaders said that health facilities in the region remain fully prepared to manage monkeypox cases effectively. They continue to enforce the Health Facility Preparedness and Response Plan specifically designed to handle outbreaks.

This comprehensive approach ensures that health services remain uninterrupted and that patients receive timely care while protecting the community from further disease spread.
