Manila Lawmaker Stands Firm on Impeachment Vote
A Manila lawmaker firmly rejected Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s claim that House members were merely following the whims of House Speaker Martin Romualdez regarding the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. Rep. Rolando Valeriano of Manila’s 2nd district emphasized that his vote reflects the true will of his constituents.
“Never,” Valeriano told reporters during an interview on Wednesday, June 4, refuting Escudero’s suggestion that lawmakers blindly obey Romualdez. He insisted that his vote to impeach the Vice President was carefully considered and aligned with the views of the people he represents.
“Yung boto ko sa impeachment, yun po yung boto po ng distrito dos ng Maynila,” Valeriano said, highlighting the responsibility he carries to his voters. He also noted, “Siguro kung mali yung pirma ko doon, baka natalo ako noong nakaraang eleksyon,” underscoring that his re-election reflects approval of his stance.
Senate’s Role in Impeachment Process
Valeriano pointed out that it is the Senate’s duty to advance the impeachment proceedings. He expressed hope that the senator-judges would begin the trial promptly to uphold the democratic process.
