Mayor Orders Removal of Overlapping Street Signs
Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso has issued a directive for the removal of overlapping street signs across the City of Manila. The move aims to address the unnecessary duplication of street signs, which officials said wastes government resources.
During a recent episode of “Yorme’s Hour,” the mayor highlighted instances of duplicate street name signs installed in various districts. “To our countrymen, that’s what we call spending government resources without any reason,” he said in Filipino, emphasizing the importance of efficient public spending.
Costly Project Under Previous Administration
The mayor presented a report titled “Installation of Reflectorized Street Name Signages” that covered districts one through six. According to sources familiar with the matter, the project cost the city P39.9 million. However, Moreno clarified that this initiative was not launched during his term.
He pointed out that the contract for these street signs was dated December 2024, prior to his administration’s tenure. Local leaders noted that such projects, while aiming to improve city navigation, require better oversight to avoid redundancy.
Efforts to Streamline City Signage
Community members expressed support for the mayor’s order, recognizing the need to optimize public resources. The removal of overlapping street signs is seen as a step toward greater transparency and accountability in local governance.
Officials reported that the city government is now reviewing all street signage installations to ensure clarity and eliminate unnecessary duplications. This approach aligns with broader efforts to enhance urban management and reduce waste.
Moving Forward with Responsible Spending
By addressing the issue of overlapping street signs, the Manila city government hopes to set an example of responsible public spending. The mayor’s directive underscores the importance of scrutinizing past projects and correcting inefficiencies for the benefit of residents.
Sources said that the city will continue to monitor infrastructure projects closely, aiming to prevent similar issues in the future and promote sustainable urban development.
