Manila Water Inaugurates Septage Treatment Facility in Calbayog
Manila Water Non-East Zone’s Calbayog Water has made a major stride in sanitation with the official opening of its Septage Treatment Facility (SpTP) in Barangay Dinagan, Calbayog City, Samar. This new facility promises to transform local sanitation standards and environmental care.
The inauguration brought together key executives from Manila Water Philippines Ventures, including COO Melvin John Tan and Regional Operations Group Director for VisMin, Roberto Vasquez. Calbayog City Mayor Reymund Uy also attended and voiced his full support for this vital community project. “This facility represents a major leap in improving the quality of life for our constituents. I commend Calbayog Water and its partners for their commitment to building not only infrastructure but also a healthier future for our people,” Mayor Uy shared.
Facility Features and Capacity
The SpTP is the first of its kind in Calbayog City designed specifically to serve residential customers. Initially, it can treat 10 cubic meters of septage per day, with plans to expand to 20 cubic meters to keep up with the growing demand. Once fully operational, the facility will provide desludging services for up to 15,000 households on a five-year cycle, functioning 240 days each year.
At the core of this facility is the advanced i-TECH Packaged Sewer Treatment Plant, which uses membrane bioreactor technology. This innovative system effectively eliminates harmful contaminants like nitrates and phosphates, ensuring treated water meets the stringent standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Environmental and Health Impact
Strategically aligned with Calbayog’s long-term environmental goals, the septage treatment plant aims to prevent groundwater pollution and lower waterborne illnesses. It also supports compliance with the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 by ensuring the safe collection, transport, treatment, and disposal of septage.
This facility is expected to significantly improve the city’s sanitation landscape by protecting public health and enhancing environmental stewardship.
Public-Private Partnership Strengthens Service
The inauguration highlights the successful collaboration between public officials and private entities. As a subsidiary of Manila Water Philippines Ventures, Calbayog Water views this facility as part of a broader strategy to expand sustainable water and sanitation services.
“The inauguration of this facility marks not only the completion of a project but the beginning of a healthier, more sustainable future for Calbayog. We are proud to partner with the local government and our stakeholders to bring essential sanitation services closer to the people,” said Melvin John Tan.
Guests were given a tour of the facility, demonstrating its innovative design, operational workflow, and sustainability features.
This milestone underscores Calbayog Water’s dedication to delivering inclusive, innovative water and sanitation solutions, ensuring no community is left behind.
