Salin Program Empowers Metro Manila Educators
Manila Water’s Salin Program has successfully engaged over 300 public elementary school teachers across Metro Manila’s East Zone, establishing itself as a vital platform for environmental education and community involvement. This program’s focus on empowering educators with water and sanitation knowledge highlights its growing impact in the region.
Launched in 2023, the Salin Program, which means “transfer,” aims to equip teachers as advocates for water conservation and proper sanitation. In its pilot phase, 57 educators from 14 schools participated through four batches. The program expanded significantly the following year, involving 166 teachers from 57 schools across 14 batches, local leaders noted.
Steady Growth and Expanding Reach
As of August this year, Salin has conducted nine batches, engaging 149 educators from 45 schools, officials reported. With additional sessions planned for the remainder of the year, the program has already reached a total of 372 participants, demonstrating its steady momentum and increasing influence.
The initiative combines technical training, interactive workshops, and watershed immersion activities to provide teachers with practical tools. These resources enable educators to incorporate water and sanitation advocacy into their curricula and school projects, community members said.
Fostering Climate-Resilient Communities
Salin operates through a partnership with the Department of Education – National Capital Region, aligning with Manila Water’s broader mission to build climate-resilient communities through education and cooperation. This collaboration strengthens the program’s capacity to reach more schools and deepen its impact.
“Our educators are vital allies in helping the next generation understand the importance of protecting our water sources including watersheds and practicing proper sanitation. Through Salin, we’re able to support them in bringing these lessons into their classrooms and communities,” a Manila Water official explained.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Environmental Advocacy
As the Salin Program continues to expand, Manila Water anticipates strengthening partnerships with educators and schools to foster a sustainable future. The initiative’s success underscores the critical role teachers play in environmental stewardship and community resilience.
