President Marcos Inspects Marawi Port
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday personally inspected the Port of Marawi as part of his tour of completed recovery and reconstruction projects in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur. The visit highlights the ongoing efforts to rebuild the city after years of conflict.
The Marawi port, a key infrastructure project costing P261.5 million, features an 8,000-square-meter backup area. It includes a single-story passenger terminal that can seat 132 people, a one-story fish port, berthing spaces for fast crafts, and a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ramp. This new port vastly improves the region’s transportation and trade capabilities.
Transforming Marawi’s Transportation Hub
Before this development, the site was only a simple causeway used by local fisherfolk. Now, the upgraded port is set to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the area. Local leaders noted the importance of this facility in revitalizing commerce and improving the daily lives of residents.
Marawi Recovery and Rehabilitation Efforts
This port project is part of the broader Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Peacebuilding Program. The initiative is led by the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development, formerly known as Task Force Bangon Marawi. It aims to accelerate the city’s recovery following the devastating five-month siege that began in May 2017.
The siege displaced nearly 400,000 residents and left much of the city in ruins. Since then, various reconstruction projects have been completed to restore normalcy and promote peace in the region. Sources said the port is a symbol of hope and progress for Marawi’s future.
