Marcos Administration Retains Key Officials Amid Cabinet Revamp

President Marcos has decided to keep two Cabinet secretaries who played significant roles in the controversial plan to arrest former President Rodrigo Duterte. This move comes as part of a broader Cabinet reshuffle within the administration.

The exact four word keyphrase “Marcos administration retains key officials” reflects this development, as Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla continue their duties. The Executive Secretary confirmed on May 29 that both officials’ resignations were declined by the President.

Resignations of DOJ and DILG Chiefs Declined

According to sources familiar with the matter, “Declined yung resignation niyan,” (His resignation was declined) referring to DOJ Secretary Remulla. Similarly, the courtesy resignation tendered by DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla was also not accepted, as stated, “Declined din.”

The Remullas had been part of the team responsible for executing the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against former President Duterte, which was processed through Interpol. Their retention signals continuity despite the ongoing Cabinet changes.

Other Cabinet Members Retained

Additionally, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro’s resignation was also rejected. Executive officials confirmed, “Yeah, yeah, definitely declined na ‘yan,” emphasizing the President’s intention to maintain stability in this key position.

Meanwhile, there is no confirmed update on National Security Adviser Eduardo Año’s status. The Executive Secretary explained that this appointment remains a personal matter between the President and the adviser. “Actually that resignation was not coursed through me because they have personal thing diyan kung ayaw ni Presidente tanggapin,” he added.

Leadership Changes in the Philippine National Police

In line with the Cabinet reshuffle, PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Nicolas Torre III, who led the ICC-related arrest operation, has been appointed as the new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to continuity in law enforcement leadership.

Implications of Retaining Key Officials

Keeping these officials despite their tendered resignations suggests that the Marcos administration values their experience and the roles they played during sensitive operations. It also reflects a strategic approach to managing the Cabinet reshuffle while avoiding disruptions in critical departments.

Local experts note that such decisions often aim to maintain institutional stability, especially when facing complex legal and security challenges.
