Marcos Stresses Accountability in Call for Reconciliation
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has extended a call for reconciliation to all sectors following the recent elections, emphasizing that this call applies to everyone, including his political opponents. However, he made it clear that this unity will never come at the cost of accountability. This stance was reiterated by Malacañang officials on May 21, underscoring the President’s commitment to national unity while upholding the rule of law.
Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that the President’s peace offering is inclusive but will not be a shield for those who must face legal consequences. “Mas maganda kung lahat ng tao ay makakasundo niya para po sa taong bayan, para magkaroon na po ng tuloy-tuloy na pagtatrabaho para sa bansa,” she stated, highlighting the importance of cooperation for the nation’s progress.
However, Castro stressed, “Hindi po gagawin ng Pangulo na lumabag sa batas para lamang sa isang reconciliation,” signaling that reconciliation will not come at the expense of the law.
Unity for the People, Not Personal Interests
The Palace Press Officer also addressed misconceptions that the reconciliation offer targets only the allies of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Despite the President’s eagerness to foster peace and political stability, Castro made it clear that this does not mean granting immunity. “Wala pong nabanggit na hindi niya ipapatupad ang batas. Wala pong nabanggit na magpapatawad siya kung may nagkasala,” she explained.
Rejecting Conditions on Reconciliation
Castro also responded to demands from Duterte’s supporters that reconciliation be conditional on Marcos facilitating the former president’s return or undergoing a hair follicle drug test. She firmly rejected these conditions, stating, “Hindi po magpapahawak sa leeg at hindi po magpapadikta ang Pangulo sa mali.” She added, “Kaibigan o batas, batas pa rin ang pipiliin ng Pangulo,” underscoring the President’s priority for law over personal ties.
President Marcos’ Vision for Unity
Earlier this week, in the first episode of his podcast, President Marcos expressed his desire to reconcile with all groups, including the Dutertes. “Ayoko ng gulo. Gusto ko makasundo sa lahat ng tao. Mas maganda,” he said, emphasizing his preference for harmony over conflict. “Marami na akong kaaway. Hindi ko kailangan ng kaaway, kailangan ko kaibigan,” he added, revealing his hope to transform adversaries into allies.
This offer for reconciliation comes amidst rising tensions between the current administration and former allies of President Duterte, especially Vice President Sara Duterte. She is currently facing an impeachment complaint related to alleged misuse of confidential funds and issuing public threats against high-ranking officials, including President Marcos himself.
