Marcos Keeps Option for Possible Ban on Online Gambling

President Marcos Considers Possible Ban on Online Gambling

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has kept the option for possible ban on online gambling open, officials reported on Tuesday. The President is carefully weighing the issue and has not made a final decision yet, as he awaits input from various stakeholders.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro shared this update amid ongoing discussions about the country’s online gambling policies, especially with the 2026 national budget nearing finalization. Marcos wants to ensure that any action taken is well-informed and balanced.

Consultations with Stakeholders to Guide Decision

According to community members close to the administration, the President plans to hold consultations before making any definitive moves. “We must study this carefully and not act hastily because we need to hear from all stakeholders and concerned parties regarding this,” Castro remarked during a press briefing.

She added, “As he said, the problem is not the playing itself, or gambling per se, or online gaming, but rather the addiction to gambling — and that’s what should be addressed first.” This highlights the administration’s focus on tackling gambling addiction rather than condemning the activity outright.

Possible Ban Dependent on Stakeholder Feedback

Castro emphasized that the President’s current stance is a preliminary opinion. “If, during the said meeting or conference with other stakeholders, it is stated that it should be banned, then the President will do so,” she explained. The decision remains open, pending thorough discussions.

While the schedule for these consultations has not been finalized, representatives from religious groups will be among those invited. Officials reported that their perspectives will be crucial in shaping the government’s approach to online gambling.

Legislative Efforts Target Online Gambling Ban

Meanwhile, several bills aiming to ban online gambling and its promotion have been filed in the Senate. Lawmakers cited the negative social impacts of online gambling, particularly on minors, as a key reason for these proposals. Local leaders noted that these legislative initiatives add urgency to the national debate.

The government’s cautious approach reflects the complexity of balancing economic interests, social welfare, and public health concerns related to online gambling. For now, President Marcos’s administration remains open to all perspectives before taking decisive action.
