Marcos Leads Donation of Starlink Units to Remote Schools
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took the lead in providing Starlink internet units to schools in remote areas of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, on Monday. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance learning opportunities for students and teachers in hard-to-reach communities.
The Starlink units were donated to several schools, including Bangon Elementary School, Bacarat National High School, Angoyao National High School, and Cabasaran Primary School. These remote schools have long struggled with unreliable or nonexistent internet connectivity, a challenge that hampers both teaching and learning.
Bringing Connectivity to Temporary Learning Spaces
Before the formal turnover, President Marcos visited the Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) in Barangay Sagonsongan. The TLS serves as emergency classrooms for students displaced by the 2017 Marawi siege. Currently, the TLS accommodates approximately 720 students from five different schools.
The TLS was established to provide makeshift classrooms where original school buildings remain destroyed or inaccessible due to conflict. By introducing Starlink units, the government hopes to offer stable internet access, empowering both educators and students to participate in modern educational activities.
Personal Commitment to Education
During his visit, Marcos personally witnessed the installation of a Starlink internet unit in Barangay Sagonsongan. This donation reflects his commitment to improving education in underserved areas by leveraging satellite-based internet technology.
In addition to connectivity, the Office of the President distributed school bags filled with supplies to all students enrolled in the TLS. These efforts aim to support learners holistically as they continue their education despite past challenges.
Local leaders noted that the Starlink donation marks a significant step in providing reliable internet access to remote schools in Marawi, helping narrow the educational gap caused by geographical and infrastructural barriers.
