Marcos Champions Rice Processing Facility in Nueva Ecija
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took the lead on Monday in inaugurating the Rice Processing System II Facility and handing over farm machinery in the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. This initiative aims to enhance rice farmers’ productivity, profitability, and global competitiveness by increasing access to modern production and post-production mechanization technologies.
The Rice Processing System II Facility features a multi-stage rice mill capable of processing two to three tons per hour. It is outfitted with essential components such as a pre-cleaner, de-stoner, huller, and an air-conditioned control room. Additionally, the facility includes two stainless steel recirculating dryers, each able to process 12 tons per batch, along with a generator set, tools, and other necessary accessories.
Boosting Farmers’ Productivity and Mechanization Access
This advanced rice processing facility is expected to benefit approximately 6,000 farmers who cultivate around 9,200 hectares within the Science City of Muñoz. Local leaders noted that expanding mechanization will help farmers increase yield while reducing post-harvest losses.
President Marcos also led the distribution of farm machinery to 17 farmers’ cooperatives and associations. The equipment provided included one four-wheel tractor with complete implements, 16 rice combine harvesters, and one handy cultivator. This move supports the government’s push to modernize agriculture and empower farmers with the right tools.
Farmers Face Challenges Amid Climate Impacts
Recent reports from agriculture officials indicated that El Niño has affected over 180,000 farmers nationwide, underscoring the importance of resilient infrastructure and support systems like the Rice Processing System II Facility. These upgrades aim to help farmers adapt and thrive despite environmental challenges.
By enhancing mechanization and processing capabilities, the government hopes to strengthen the entire rice production chain, from planting to post-harvest management. This will help secure food supply, raise income for farmers, and improve the Philippines’ competitiveness in the global rice market.
