President Marcos Commits to Stronger Consumer Protection Against Online Fraud
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pledged stronger consumer protection against online fraud as the Philippines advances its digital economy. Speaking at the Manila Tech Summit 2025 in Taguig City, he emphasized the urgent need to shield Filipino consumers from rising cyber scams and fraudulent activities.
“These reforms are meant to protect consumers in the digital marketplace from fraud, scams, and unsafe transactions,” local officials reported Marcos saying, highlighting the alarming increase in online financial crimes.
Key Measures to Combat Online Fraud
Among the key initiatives to enhance consumer protection against online fraud, the government plans to implement the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act. This law aims to curb fraudulent financial schemes that target unsuspecting users.
Furthermore, the creation of an E-Commerce Bureau will streamline oversight and regulation of online transactions. The bureau will serve as a central authority to ensure safer digital trade practices.
Officials also reaffirmed the ongoing enforcement of the SIM Registration Act, which helps reduce anonymous online scams by linking mobile numbers to verified identities.
Preparing Filipinos for a Digital Future
Marcos also stressed the importance of equipping the Filipino workforce with digital skills to thrive in emerging industries. “We are undertaking measures to re-skill and up-skill more Filipinos in emerging technology,” community members said he declared.
The government is investing in training programs focused on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, e-commerce, and creative design. These efforts aim to prepare workers for new opportunities and global competition.
Summit Highlights and Broader Strategy
The Manila Tech Summit 2025 gathered policymakers, industry leaders, and technology innovators to discuss the country’s digital transformation. It provided a platform to unveil the administration’s two-pronged approach: strengthening consumer trust in the digital economy while building a digitally skilled workforce.
Local leaders noted that this strategy reflects a commitment to protect Filipinos from online fraud and to ensure the nation’s competitiveness in the international technology landscape.
