Marikina River Third Alarm Raised Amid Heavy Rainfall
MANILA, Philippines — The Marikina River third alarm was declared Monday evening due to continuous downpour caused by the southwest monsoon. This persistent habagat brought heavy rains across Metro Manila and several parts of Luzon, raising concerns over flooding.
By 10:20 p.m., the river’s water level surged to 18.2 meters, triggering forced evacuations in vulnerable communities, local officials reported. The Marikina Public Information Office (PIO) confirmed these developments on its official social media channels.
Rising Water Levels Prompt Alerts
The water level first reached 15 meters at 12:25 p.m., which marked the first alarm threshold. It then climbed steadily to 16 meters by 1:53 p.m., activating the second alarm. The rapid rise in water level reflects the severity of the ongoing rains and the river’s response to increased water flow.
Heavy Rains Trigger Red Warnings Across Regions
Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Bataan, and parts of Bulacan remain under red rainfall warnings. This alert signals potential heavy rain accompanied by flooding in certain areas, urging residents to stay vigilant and prepare for possible emergencies.
Local authorities reminded the public to follow evacuation orders and avoid flood-prone zones as safety measures continue amid the habagat’s impact.
Weather Bureau Monitors Low-Pressure Areas
Earlier in the day, the national weather bureau reported monitoring two low-pressure areas (LPAs) within the Philippine area of responsibility as of 2:00 p.m. Both LPAs have a medium chance of developing into tropical depressions within 24 hours, sources said.
These weather disturbances, combined with the southwest monsoon, contribute to the heavy rainfall affecting the region. Officials continue to advise residents to stay alert for further updates.
