Mark Villar Pushes Road Safety Education in Schools

Mark Villar Advocates Road Safety Education in Schools

MANILA, Philippines — In light of the rising number of road-related fatalities worldwide and locally, Senator Mark Villar has introduced a bill to integrate road safety education into the K to 12 curriculum. This move aims to address the urgent need for awareness and prevention among young Filipinos.

Each year, road crashes claim approximately 1.19 million lives globally, according to international health authorities. The Philippines has seen a disturbing increase in fatal and traumatic road accidents, many involving children and teenagers. This troubling trend has sparked concern across social media platforms and local communities.

“Nakakabahala at nakakatakot po ang mga kaso ng mga insidente sa ating mga kalsada ngayong taon, napakarami na po ang mga pamilyang nawalan ng tatay, nanay, at pati na rin mga anak,” Senator Villar remarked, emphasizing the critical importance of early education on road safety.

Addressing Youth Road Safety Through Education

Statistics from local agencies reveal that a significant number of road accidents involve minors. Senator Villar views these figures as a clear call to action. He believes that teaching road discipline, safe driving habits, and responsible road use from a young age can drastically reduce accidents.

“Marami po sa mga kasong ito ay may kabilang na kabataan; kaya naisip ko po na mas paigtingin dapat ang road safety na kung saan ituturo po ito sa lahat ng paaralan,” he added.

Under the proposed law, students throughout all grade levels will learn fundamental road safety rules, pedestrian guidelines, traffic sign recognition, and the basics of responsible driving. The goal is to foster a culture of safety starting in the classroom.

Schools as Platforms for Safer Roads

Senator Villar stressed that while laws and enforcement are essential, cultivating proper road behavior begins with education. Schools serve as vital venues for instilling discipline and awareness before accidents happen.

This initiative aligns with Villar’s broader efforts to enhance road safety nationwide and promote a safety-first mindset, particularly among the youth. Local leaders and communities have expressed support for this educational approach.
