Mayor Francis Zamora Supports EDSA Rebuilding Halt
San Juan City Mayor and Metro Manila Council (MMC) President Francis Zamora expressed full support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s decision to temporarily halt the scheduled rebuilding of EDSA. Zamora emphasized that this pause allows the government to find faster, more efficient, and less disruptive ways to carry out the project, minimizing burdens on commuters and businesses.
“I fully support the decision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. to suspend the scheduled rebuilding of EDSA in order to explore faster, more efficient, and less disruptive methods of reconstruction. This move demonstrates the President’s responsiveness to the daily concerns of commuters and motorists who rely heavily on Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare,” Zamora said.
While recognizing the urgent need for EDSA’s structural rehabilitation, the mayor praised the President’s commitment to ensuring that reconstruction efforts do not place unnecessary strain on Filipino citizens. He also reiterated San Juan City’s readiness to cooperate with the national government on alternative traffic routes and rebuilding plans.
San Juan City’s Efforts to Ease Traffic
As EDSA runs through San Juan, the city government is keenly aware of its role in alleviating traffic congestion. Mayor Zamora noted that the city continues regular road clearing operations, especially along designated Mabuhay Lanes, to improve traffic flow for both public and private transport.
In December last year, San Juan opened the Greenhills–West Crame Connector Road, offering motorists a faster alternative route. This new road links Eisenhower Street in Barangay Greenhills to 3rd West Street in Barangay West Crame, effectively easing vehicle volume on EDSA and surrounding areas.
Previously, this area consisted of privately-owned lots dividing the two barangays. The city government purchased these lands and transformed them into a public thoroughfare. “Opening this section will be very beneficial not just for residents of Barangays West Crame and Greenhills, but also for motorists passing through our city,” Zamora explained.
Strict Enforcement Along Mabuhay Lanes
Both Eisenhower Street and 3rd West Street are part of the Mabuhay Lanes, designated as no-parking zones. The city enforces the San Juan City Wheel Clamping Ordinance (C.O. No. 70, Series of 2022) alongside the MMDA Resolution No. 10, Series of 2010. This means illegally parked vehicles along these lanes will be clamped or towed to maintain smooth traffic.
“We welcome continued collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation, MMDA, and other stakeholders as the national government reassesses its strategy for EDSA,” Zamora added. He reaffirmed San Juan City’s commitment to solutions that benefit residents and daily commuters traversing EDSA.
