Helping OFWs Handle Medical Costs
The Department of Migrant Workers continues to support Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) through vital health programs like MEDplus. This initiative offers additional financial assistance to active OWWA and PhilHealth members who are battling serious illnesses. Whether an OFW is hospitalized abroad or back home in the Philippines, MEDplus helps ease the financial burden that often comes with major medical treatments.
Illnesses can strike at any time, and when they do, they bring more than just physical challenges. Hospital bills can quickly add up, especially in cases involving life-threatening diseases. That’s where MEDplus steps in—by covering part of the medical expenses, this program becomes a safety net that prevents financial hardship for OFWs and their families.
Supplemental Coverage for Major Illnesses
Under MEDplus, eligible OFWs may receive financial support equivalent to the case rate set by PhilHealth. However, the maximum benefit is capped at ₱50,000 per member. This supplemental coverage is not meant to replace PhilHealth, but rather to add another layer of assistance when the primary insurance isn’t enough to cover total expenses.
To qualify, the OFW must be an active member of both OWWA and PhilHealth at the time of illness and hospitalization. Medical treatment must also be for a dreaded or serious disease. Importantly, hospitalization may occur either at the worksite or upon the OFW’s return to the Philippines.
Department of Migrant Workers Strengthens Support
This initiative reflects the Department of Migrant Workers’ ongoing commitment to protect the well-being of OFWs—not only during employment but also during recovery. MEDplus complements other OWWA programs that offer safety nets for education, livelihood, and death or disability. By targeting healthcare needs, the program ensures that sick OFWs aren’t left alone to shoulder overwhelming medical expenses.
Through MEDplus, the government hopes to send a clear message: our modern-day heroes deserve not just recognition, but real, accessible support in times of need.
