Meta Launches Standalone AI Assistant App
Meta has introduced its first standalone AI assistant app, providing users a direct way to engage with its generative artificial intelligence models. This new app aims to offer a personalized AI experience, distinguishing itself from existing AI assistants by integrating closely with users’ interests and interactions.
“A billion people are using Meta AI across our apps now, so we made a new standalone Meta AI app for you to check out,” the company’s CEO said in a video announcement. The app is designed to function as a personal AI, primarily accessed through voice conversations that adapt to individual users over time.
Personalized Conversations and Social Features
Initially, the AI assistant app starts with basic context about a user’s interests. However, users can gradually share more details, such as information about their family and close connections across the company’s platforms, if they choose. This allows the AI to offer more tailored responses and assistance.
Embracing the company’s social media roots, the app also includes a social feed where users can view AI-generated posts created by others. “We learn from seeing each other do it, so we put this right in the app,” the company’s chief product officer said during a recent developer event. Users can share their prompts and AI-generated art, making the experience interactive and enjoyable.
Integration with Smart Glasses and Devices
The new application replaces the previous companion app for smart glasses, enabling seamless conversations across glasses, mobile devices, and desktops. The focus remains on voice as the most natural interface, aiming to make user interactions as effortless as possible.
Experimental Human-Like Interaction Mode
Meta has also introduced an experimental mode that allows the AI to engage in lively, human-style conversations. This includes natural interruptions, laughter, and dialog, simulating the experience of a phone call. However, this feature currently does not support web searches, so inquiries about real-time events or specific topics like sports teams are not supported yet.
Users can opt to let the AI learn from their activity on social platforms, helping it remember personal details such as family members’ names and important dates. This approach aims to make the assistant more helpful and attentive to users’ needs.
Open-Source AI Model and Developer Engagement
The release arrives as the AI landscape is dominated by a well-known AI assistant that frequently updates its capabilities. In contrast, Meta highlights its open-source AI model, which allows developers to customize and adapt the software to their needs. This flexibility is a key advantage, enabling developers to mix and match features from various models.
“Part of the value around open source is that you can mix and match,” the CEO said during the developer conference. “You have the ability to take the best parts of the intelligence from the different models and produce exactly what you need, which I think is going to be very powerful.”
