Metro Manila Police Step Up Patrol Operations Targeting Criminals Posing as Riders
Police Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin, director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), has launched regular patrol operations to crack down on robbers and criminals masquerading as motorcycle taxi and delivery riders across Metro Manila. These actions aim to protect the public and restore trust in legitimate ride-hailing services.
Aberin emphasized the importance of distinguishing genuine riders from impostors. “We have coordinated with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and motorcycle taxi companies to ensure that our operations accurately identify legitimate motorcycle and delivery riders,” sources said.
Targeted Operations in Quezon City Bus Terminals
On June 6, law enforcement teams, along with MMDA personnel and JoyRide marshals, conducted a focused operation in several Quezon City bus terminals, spots known as common hangouts for motorcycle taxi riders. This joint effort stemmed from growing concerns about unauthorized individuals wearing ride-hailing uniforms to carry out criminal acts such as hold-ups, shootings, and kidnappings.
“This joint proactive action was made following increasing concerns over unauthorized individuals wearing ride-hailing uniforms to pose as legitimate riders while allegedly engaging in criminal activities such as hold-ups, shootings, and kidnappings,” Aberin said. “The NCRPO took this matter seriously as a critical issue of public safety and brand integrity.”
Swift Police Response Ahead of School Opening
The timing of these patrol operations is crucial, especially with the opening of classes scheduled for June 16. Aberin noted that this period would also serve as a test of the national police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III’s five-minute police response directive.
He assured that more targeted patrol operations will follow in the coming days to maintain public safety and uphold trust in ride-hailing services.
“This operation reflects our swift and responsive public service and our unity with partner agencies,” Aberin explained. “We are fully committed to protecting the public from criminal elements who exploit trust and identity.”
The NCRPO remains vigilant in supporting lawful initiatives that promote safety and in holding accountable those who misuse company uniforms to commit crimes.
