Metro Manila’s Trash Collection on Election Day
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported that on Election Day Monday, a total of 6.1 tons of trash were gathered throughout the National Capital Region. This amounts to 6,100 kilograms of waste collected across the area.
In total, 288 bags of garbage were picked up from 17 cities and one municipality within Metro Manila. The most waste came from Malabon, where 1.48 tons or 1,480 kilograms were gathered. Manila followed with 0.97 tons, Paraque with 0.72 tons, and District I-B in Quezon City with 0.59 tons.
Efforts Toward a Basura-Free Election
Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition has urged for a “basura-free” election this year. They called on both local and national candidates to follow the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and to avoid littering during the final campaign events on May 10.
“As the official campaign period ends this Saturday, we appeal to all candidates to ensure that their remaining activities do not contribute to further environmental degradation,” said Zero-Waste campaigner Cris Luague.
He added, “Please do not turn the venues of your miting de avance into dumpsites. Enforce RA 9003 and the ‘clean as you go’ policy, as well as implement a ‘no smoking, no vaping’ policy.”
Ongoing Cleanup and Regulation Measures
Earlier in February, the Commission on Elections launched Oplan Baklas, a campaign to remove campaign materials posted in prohibited areas. This initiative aims to keep public spaces clear and reduce environmental impact during election periods.
With the total trash collection figures and calls for responsible campaigning, authorities and environmental advocates continue to push for cleaner and greener election activities.
