Metro Manila Road Safety Plan Targets Inclusive Streets
MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has unveiled the Metro Manila Road Safety Plan to create safer, more inclusive streets across the region. This comprehensive initiative focuses on tackling road safety challenges head-on.
The Metro Manila Road Safety Plan centers on five key pillars: road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash response. Using data-driven strategies, the plan aims to identify high-risk areas and implement targeted solutions to reduce accidents and fatalities.
Collaborative Launch at Metro Manila Road Safety Summit
Although the plan was developed in May 2024 and covers 2024 to 2028, the MMDA formally launched it during the Metro Manila Road Safety Summit in Parañaque City. The event brought together national agencies, local governments, transport groups, civil society, academia, and private sector representatives.
The MMDA highlighted the alarming rate of road crashes and deaths in the region as a motivating factor for the summit. Officials stressed the urgent need to improve road user behavior, upgrade infrastructure, and enforce traffic laws more strictly.
Alarming Road Crash Statistics Demand Action
From 2013 to 2023, road crashes in Metro Manila resulted in 4,450 fatalities, according to MMDA data from the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System. In the same period, over one million crashes were recorded.
Most incidents, about 81%, caused property damage. Meanwhile, 19% led to non-fatal injuries, and 0.44% resulted in deaths. These figures underscore the critical importance of the Metro Manila Road Safety Plan and its data-driven approach to reducing crashes and saving lives.
