Mexican Navy Training Ship Collides with Brooklyn Bridge

Late Saturday evening, a Mexican Navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in significant damage and injuries. The incident caused all three of the ship’s masts to snap off as it attempted to pass beneath this iconic New York City landmark. At least 22 people were reported injured during the accident.

Witnesses enjoying the warm spring night watched in shock as the ship, adorned with festive lights and with its sails furled, struck the bridge. The impact sheared off the towering masts, which then fell into the East River below.

Injuries and Immediate Response

According to official statements from the Mexican Navy, 22 individuals aboard the vessel sustained injuries, with three in critical condition. Contrary to some reports suggesting sailors were caught in the rigging at the time of impact, the Navy confirmed that no one fell into the water and no water rescues were necessary.

Local emergency services quickly transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Community sources indicate that the crew aboard the ship numbered approximately 200 during the training exercise when the accident occurred.

Damage and Official Statements

The training ship involved is the Cuauhtemoc, a barque constructed in 1982, featuring masts reaching 48.2 meters (158 feet) in height. The vessel was conducting a training maneuver when the collision happened, resulting in damage described as a “mishap” by naval officials.

The Mexican Navy reiterated its dedication to the safety of its personnel, transparency in its operations, and the high standards maintained in training future officers. They emphasized their commitment despite the unfortunate event.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision to prevent similar incidents in the future.
