Meycauayan City Declares State of Calamity Due to Habagat
Meycauayan City in Bulacan has officially joined the growing list of areas placed under the state of calamity as relentless rains from the southwest monsoon, known locally as habagat, along with two tropical storms, continue to batter the Philippines. This declaration enables the city government to respond swiftly to the mounting damages caused by the severe weather.
The city council approved Resolution No. 2025-042, series of 2025, which triggered the state of calamity declaration. “This resolution allows expedited release of funds for relief efforts and rehabilitation operations,” local officials said in a public advisory. By declaring this status, Meycauayan can access emergency funds to support affected residents and speed up recovery initiatives.
Price Freeze and Relief Efforts in Place
In addition to unlocking financial resources, the resolution enforces a price freeze on basic goods and necessities for 60 days. This measure aims to prevent profiteering amid the crisis and ensure that residents have access to affordable supplies during the emergency period.
Other Cities Also Declare State of Calamity
Meycauayan is not alone in this declaration. Several other local government units (LGUs) such as Manila City, Quezon City, Marikina City, and Cebu City have also declared states of calamity due to the ongoing impact of habagat. These coordinated actions are critical to mobilizing resources and reinforcing disaster response efforts across the country.
Legal Framework Supports Local Disaster Response
Under Republic Act 10121, known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, LGUs have the authority to declare a state of calamity. This law permits them to access and utilize their calamity funds effectively, enabling a faster and more efficient response to natural disasters.
Local leaders noted that these declarations help communities prepare better and recover faster from calamities brought by extreme weather events. The declaration of a state of calamity serves as a crucial tool in managing the challenges posed by the ongoing habagat and tropical storms.
