From Llanera to Leadership: The Early Rise of Marc John Castañeto
SAN NARCISO, Zambales — Midshipman 1st Class Marc John Castañeto’s journey from a humble town in Llanera, Nueva Ecija, to becoming the valedictorian of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy’s Kawal ng Dalampasigan, Liwanag ng Karagatan (“Kadaligtan”) Class of 2025 illustrates the power of perseverance and early dedication.
He shared his story during the commencement exercises on August 15, emphasizing the invaluable lessons learned from his parents. “My Mama taught me patience and kindness — the power of words. My Papa taught me grit — how to work with your hands and how to stand tall even when life bends you low,” Castañeto said, capturing the essence of his early foundation.
Early Challenges and Discoveries at PMMA
Coming from a non-maritime background, Castañeto admitted that stepping into the academy was daunting. “I had no clue about ships or how things worked at sea. I was surrounded by people who spoke like they’d been born on a ship. I wasn’t one of them,” he recalled.
However, his early realization went beyond technical skills. “It’s not just about being a seafarer. It’s about being a leader — not shouting orders or standing tall just to look strong. It’s standing firm when the waves get wild, staying calm when everything’s shaking, and lifting others when they’re down. It’s knowing your purpose, and helping others find theirs,” he reflected.
Early Leadership Roots and Academic Excellence
Even before joining PMMA, Castañeto’s leadership journey began early. He served as vice president of the Supreme Student Government at Charles Angel Montessori School and Llanera National High School, where he also led as editor-in-chief of the school paper.
His academic dedication continued as he graduated senior high school as valedictorian at Midway Colleges Inc. in Cabanatuan City. There, he held the position of vice chancellor of the Student Council during the 2020-2021 school year. Community members noted that to support his family, he actively participated in competitions with cash prizes and sought multiple scholarships, ultimately choosing PMMA for its free education and promising career prospects.
Outstanding Achievements and Recognition
Throughout his tenure at PMMA, Castañeto represented the academy in numerous local and international events. Officials reported that he successfully passed the MARINA Officer-in-Charge of an Engineering Watch (Engine Operational Level) Examination in July, showcasing his technical competence.
Thanks to PMMA’s collaboration with Crossworld Marine Services Inc., one of the country’s largest manning agencies, he was selected as a company scholar, a testament to his commitment and early promise.
For his remarkable accomplishments, Castañeto was honored with the Presidential Saber Award, personally conferred by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the graduation ceremony, highlighting his exceptional early achievements.
Kadaligtan Class of 2025: A Milestone for PMMA
The Kadaligtan Class of 2025 comprises 252 graduating midshipmen from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering programs, marking a significant milestone for the academy, local leaders noted.
Midshipman 1st Class Marc John Castañeto’s story is a powerful reminder that early determination and steadfast leadership can shape a promising future in the maritime industry.
