MILF Decommissioning Suspension Sparks Urgent Government Talks

Government Urges Dialogue on MILF Decommissioning Suspension

Malacañang emphasized the need for thorough discussions with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) following its suspension of the decommissioning of thousands of combatants and weapons. The four-word keyphrase “MILF decommissioning suspension” highlights this critical issue at the center of peace efforts.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro shared that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed deep disappointment over the suspension. The government has been committed to providing support and funds to help former combatants transition to peaceful civilian lives.

“Each MILF combatant is entitled to P100,000 in cash assistance,” Castro explained. “Moreover, over P400 billion has been allocated for socio-economic programs, with many other initiatives underway to support the peace process.”

She added, “What’s needed now is a deeper dialogue to ensure a more positive outcome, especially for MILF members.” This call for meaningful talks aims to address the concerns raised by the group about the transition’s progress.

MILF Calls for Compliance Before Further Decommissioning

The MILF recently issued a resolution, signed by Chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim and Secretary Muhammad Ameen, stating that the decommissioning of the remaining 14,000 combatants and 2,450 weapons will only proceed once the government substantially complies with agreed normalization commitments.

Ebrahim stressed that to honor the spirit of the Annex on Normalization, clear progress must be evident in providing socio-economic support to those already profiled for decommissioning before others can begin the process.

The Annex on Normalization, a key peace agreement between the government and MILF, outlines measures to keep Bangsamoro communities safe and promote steady employment and peaceful political engagement.

Government Responds to MILF Transition Concerns

Castro acknowledged the MILF’s claim that no combatant has fully transitioned to productive civilian life. She reassured that more in-depth conversations are planned to achieve better results and ensure the welfare of former fighters.

She concluded, “Meaningful discussions are a good starting point to resolve these issues and move forward with the peace process.” Both sides appear committed to dialogue despite the current suspension.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Peace and Normalization Efforts

The ongoing dialogue between the government and MILF is crucial to maintaining momentum in the peace process. Authorities continue to focus on socio-economic packages and programs designed to uplift the lives of former combatants and their communities.

As the talks progress, both parties aim to find common ground that respects agreements and addresses concerns fairly. The goal remains a lasting peace and stable development in Bangsamoro.
