Mindanao Meat Industry Boost with Local Sourcing Initiative
Davao City—In a significant move to strengthen Mindanao’s agricultural sector, the country’s largest meat importer is set to source part of its meat supply directly from local farmers starting this year. This initiative aims to enhance the local meat industry while supporting farmers across the region.
According to sources familiar with the matter, a leading meat import and export company has committed to purchasing beef, goat meat (chevon), chicken, and pork from various Mindanao producers. This development promises to create new opportunities for farmers and livestock raisers.
Local Partnership to Support Farmers
The agreement was finalized through collaboration involving the company’s CEO, a cattle fattening expert, and a family-owned farm in North Cotabato. Initially, the company will source cattle locally. However, as demand grows, imported steers from Australia will supplement the supply, while local farmers receive support to increase cattle production through private-sector-led programs.
The company’s president plans to start with a supply of at least 1,000 heads of cattle each month, with intentions to expand as sorghum production—used for cattle feed—grows. Additionally, the company will procure goat meat, broiler and free-range chicken, and pork, products commonly bought from local markets.
Halal Beef Facility and Infrastructure Plans
Local government units are also involved in this initiative. The first to participate is Kidapawan City, which will establish a halal beef production facility to support the supply chain. The company expects to procure around 150 beef carcasses daily initially, necessitating cold storage facilities to preserve meat before shipment.
This development marks a major opportunity for North Cotabato’s agricultural economy. Raising and fattening cattle requires significant feed resources, including corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Thus, local farmers growing these crops stand to benefit from increased demand driven by the meat industry expansion.
Positive Impact on Mindanao’s Economy
Local experts note that this initiative could transform the livestock sector in Mindanao. By integrating local farmers into the supply chain of a major meat importer, the project encourages sustainable growth and greater self-sufficiency. It addresses both supply and market challenges while fostering rural development.
Moreover, the program’s focus on private sector involvement ensures that farmers receive technical and financial support to ramp up production. This partnership model may serve as a blueprint for other agricultural industries across the Philippines.
