Fishermen Rescued by Cargo Ship Near Pangasinan
One of the missing fishermen from Pangasinan province was safely rescued and brought to Subic Bay Freeport on board an international cargo ship on Saturday, July 26. The rescue marks a hopeful turn in a search for fishermen lost amid rough seas.
Commander Euphraim Jayson Diciano, chief of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) station in Zambales, reported that the Malaysian-flagged Royal Cargo vessel MV Shinline 10 contacted their Olongapo City sub-station on Friday, July 23. The ship’s agent informed authorities that the crew had rescued a fisherman named Rodolfo Montes that same day.
Search After Storms Claims One Survivor
Montes, a resident of Dasol town in Pangasinan, was one of two fishermen reported missing earlier this week. Both had set out to sea despite warnings of turbulent waters caused by the southwest monsoon, compounded by Tropical Storm “Dante” and Severe Tropical Storm “Emong.” Unfortunately, only Montes was found, saved by the passing cargo ship’s crew.
The PCG in Zambales said that Pangasinan authorities confirmed Montes and his companion went fishing on Monday, July 21, and were expected to return by Thursday but never did. The timely rescue by MV Shinline 10 prevented a potential tragedy.
Safe Return and Ongoing Investigation
Since MV Shinline 10’s next stop was the Naval Supply Depot (NSD) in Subic Bay, the cargo ship handed Montes over to the nearest PCG sub-station upon arrival. Diciano shared that Montes’ family has been informed and is preparing to meet him in Olongapo City.
Authorities are now verifying further details about the vessel’s last port of call, ship information, and Montes’ personal background. The rescue highlights the crucial role of international vessels and local agencies working together to save lives at sea.
